Professor at Linköping University Stefan Holmlid started today his 3-day pill on social innovation and public services, a course aimed at supporting students to understand how to design in the overlap between public and other sectors. The module will consist in a mix of theoretical input in the mornings and design work in the afternoons, with both individual and group exercises. The main exercise will consist in the redesign of a public sector service exemplar, focusing on the program aspects in translational design.
The students will thus learn the basics of working in this sector, and how design of such services rely on organizational factors. Central concepts that will be covered are practice vs program, resilience vs dependency, knowledge intensive practice vs layperson practice, public/private/voluntary.
