The Design Council has published a qualitative research project that investigates the strategic use of design at senior levels in a sample of UK and global businesses. Together with Warwick Business School, the Design Council interviewed business leaders that apply design to board levels. The final report presents the three main findings:

– First design is customer centered, meaning that the highest benefit is achieved when dealing with customer problems.
– Second design is most powerful when culturally embedded. If it has the support of the organisation, specially from the highest management levels.
– Third, design adds value to any organisation whether it is manufacturing or service oriented.

The report also produced a series of recommendations for maximizing the impact of design when applied at a business level.

The Summit: The research also inspired a high level summit that will take place at the British Museum on February 2014.
